Self-Reliance Courses
Camp Fire USA's nationally developed Self-Reliance curriculum is
designed to teach children the life skills they need to meet today's
challenges. Taught by volunteers and AmeriCorps members, the
age-appropriate curriculum is presented in classroom and small group
settings and helps children learn to handle conflict, solve problems, and
make positive choices. Courses include:
- I'm Safe and Sure! teaches kindergarten and first-graders helpful safety
skills. They identify safe and unsafe use of medicine, drugs and other
potentially dangerous substances. Through puppet shows, children learn how
to handle situations involving strangers and the dangers of unsafe play
areas.
- I Can Do It! shows second- and third-graders the importance of eating and
selecting nutritious food. In addition, this course teaches children how
to handle unsafe situations away from home, and about fire, bicycle and
weather safety. Children also explore and practice techniques to
communicate effectively to handle conflict.
- I'm Peer Proof! is designed for fourth- through sixth-graders. The course
teaches children how to resist negative peer pressure and maintain positive
friendships.
